Revised Research Plan 3/2

The revised research plan is where you will describe how you will occupy the niche you identified in the literature review. Spend some time reviewing how the literature review sections transition into methodology sections of the student research papers we have read this term, and then decide on a method most appropriate for your topic. We will talk extensively about the methods section of your paper in class over the next few meetings.

The Task: Write a planning document that outlines the following:
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question should have changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your literature review to describe your niche.

2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.

3) How will you go about doing the research? Be as specific as possible about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus group, textual analysis, and so on).

  1. At first glance, numerous papers attempt to classify and create experimental diagnoses for internet addiction disorder in order to solve the disorder (Casale, Fiovaranti, and Caplan, 2015; Cash, Rae, Steel, and Winkler, 2012; King, Delfabbro, Griffiths, and Gradisar, 2012; Yellowlees and Marks, 2007; Zimmerman and Ybarra, 2014). However, researchers have been stalemated in an endless debate for a decade. The lack of empirical research on the efficacy of treatment, accountability, or prevention of internet addiction disorder is staggering. Sometimes you need to learn to run before you can walk; research needs to focus on potential treatments and prevention for Internet addiction disorder.

Through researching different treatment methods for Internet addiction disorder, I stumbled across online therapy. An equal alternative to traditional therapy, online therapy reaches farther and has the ability to address a specific audience. Evidence has proven there is a type of person associated with Internet addiction disorder (Yellowees and Marks, 2007). Studies tend to target a generic group such as college students or adolescents. I want to expand the reach of treatments. Specifically, online therapy appeals to the personality type of introverts due to certain advantages of the aspects of it. My question therein lies: would certain personality types influence the likelihood of people attending online therapy over traditional therapy and would this be because of the advantages online therapy provides?

To answer my question, between fifty and a hundred willing participants will be issued a questionnaire or interview on their thoughts and experiences of their treatment of Internet Addiction Disorder through a Reddit post. Reddit is the ideal population of the study due to the similarities of people on Reddit and sufferers of Internet addiction disorder. Participants have the choice to do an interview or questionnaire. To do so, they must be at least 18 years old and if under 18 must have a guardian or parent signature. Disguising the questions and utilizing Young’s Internet Addiction Test, I will obtain whether participants identify as having Internet addiction disorder. In addition, my questions will reveal their introvertism or extrovertism and their attitudes towards online therapy. Lastly, a free response will be listed that will ask why to justify participants attitudes towards online therapy. This will test if the advantages of online therapy are the reason. Positive results indicate yes for internet addiction, yes for introverted, yes for online therapy, and yes for advantages of online therapy. During the following two months of the brief questionnaire or interview, the participants may be asked, at their discretion, for some follow up questions or interview.

  2. Many of the sources I gathered conducted research on human emotions. There are many sources on human emotions, however many of them are missing key factors. All humans experience and feel unique emotions. Originally, I began my search to find out why emotions occur. Afterwards, my search widened to how humans interpret their emotions. Multiple humans can experience the same situation, yet they will have different emotional outcomes. The question fully developed into why do humans have emotions and why do they vary?

Since emotions vary, many different group categories can be created. However, to keep results consistent only three groups will be formed. Other factors will be considered, but gender will be the primary factor. The age of participants will be any age greater than or equal to eighteen. However, a variety of different ages will be taken in the study.

I plan to create a study based on a survey. These participants will be from various age groups and will be from both genders. Approximately half will be female and half will be male. All participants are required to not have any mental conditions. Seventy-five participants will be randomly selected. Twenty-five will be the female group, twenty-five will be in the male group and the remaining participants will be the control group. Participants will be shown pictures and will be told hypothetical situations. Their responses will be recorded and compared against each other. This analysis will be based off their group, age and preexisting given background.

  3. Rhetoric has and will always be a vital aspect of human communication and politics. The persuasion in the rhetoric of politicians is what causes them to succeed. Prior to beginning this research paper, I had several options on what I would like to study and several ideas on ways to approach these studies. Though this may be the case, the topic/research question of “What types of rhetorical strategies are used in successful political campaigns” seemed to be the one I was the most passionate about. After witnessing one of the most politically incorrect presidential races in American History, I felt that personally I had to get to the bottom of why Donald Trump won. After observing the different political campaigns, I could not understand how Donald Trump used the type of words he used, and still managed to gain the support of much of the country in order to win the election. I arrived at my research question from a combination of curiosity and frustration about all the events I have stated so far.

When looking for sources, I began by searching on the internet for “rhetoric in politics”. Then I began to narrow my search, after finding some adequate sources from my initial search. I searched for “Donald Trump’s rhetoric” and “Modern rhetoric”. I then used the sources I found from those searches to compare the rhetoric of politicians in World History to the rhetoric used by politicians today. I plan on showing how political rhetoric has changed but remains effective today, in my research paper. Upon reviewing several sources, each source has one thing in common. Each author could agree with each other on the fact that rhetoric is a complex art that is always evolving/changing. Some have argued that political rhetoric and discourse has devolved (Beard, 2015). While some have argued that the rhetoric of modern day politicians, like Donald Trump, is like we have never seen before (Pergram, 2016). All the sources that I have gathered have done text-based research. By text-based research I mean analyzing speeches and words of successful politicians and showing how these politicians utilized rhetoric to influence public opinion. While searching for sources, I stumbled upon a couple of scholarly articles and books that analyze the art of rhetoric and communication. These sources have been very important to my research because they have helped me understand what rhetoric is and how it is used in general. I plan on using the several scholarly and popular sources that I have gathered to use as textual support for my research question. I plan on analyzing 4 speeches from 3 politicians who ran successful campaigns. I will choose 1 speech given by, American politician and 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton, during his presidential campaign. Then I will analyze the rhetoric involved in 2 speeches given by, American politician and 44th president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama II, during his two runs for the presidency. Then finally, I will analyze the rhetoric used in 1 speech from, the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, during the 2016 presidential race. I will analyze these speeches and identify the rhetorical strategies used in the speeches and show which ones these politicians had in common. I will also show how the use of these rhetorical strategies correlate to success in these political campaigns.

  4. Why does transsexualism effect the world so much ? How did transsexuals come about and what are we doing to help it ? I came up with this question during a discussion with friends and how they thought that homosexuality and transsexualism is a hormone deficiency in the brain. With me having a transsexual sister I wanted to dig deeper into the history of transsexualism and how it came about to explain that it does not have anything to do with the brain and to also show how the world is adapting to transsexualism. I plan to interview several trans/ homosexual individuals to see how they have experienced change in the world regrading their sexuality. I will go about doing my research by going to different LGBTQ groups and clubs and asking permission to interview individuals. I want to have at least 3 to 4 different individuals.

  5. 1) How does a parent’s influence accommodate traits that put a child at risk of furthering depression and anxiety?

My question is basically asking how do parenting styles and things that parents say and do affect a child’s emotions and actions in a way that harbors traits that further increase the development of depression and anxiety. I arrived at this question by locating the gaps and focusing on things that a lot of researchers forgot to mention. I looked at styles of parenting and what works and what doesn’t work in regards to the psychology of humans and society as a whole. I looked at the different age levels and was surprised to find that children as young as 5 can develop symptoms of depression and experience episodes in the same way a 20 year old may experience one.

    2) I plan to collect background information such as family structure, what type of parenting style do the parents exhibit, what did the student think the parents could’ve done better with regards to their emotions and affirming their independence, and their current relationship with their parent/s. I also plan to inquire about their turning points as a child. What experiences do they have that they feel shaped them as people?

    3) I plan to offer a survey to college age students recalling specific times at pivotal points in childhood. This will help me to understand how these moments shaped those who took the survey and what came from it. I also plan to conduct focus group of individuals who feel they fit this criteria and present leading questions that help me to further understand and possibly get a new idea or a new track to study.

  6. While I began searching for a topic that meant something to me, the first four questions I came up with after a few days of thinking had depth to them, but lacked any interest from me. Sure, each were relevant to topics I were interested in (one was based on movie, another on video games), but none seemed like a topic that would provide a new perspective within my paper. A last-minute decision from me was to come up with another question – which would explore the idea of gendering found within toy design and marketing. I love toys, and the whole “is [insert toy name here] sexist” discussion interests me. I don’t think majority of toys are sexist, especially the ones people usually call sexist, but I wanted to see if doing research would change my view here. As I did some preliminary research, I disagreed with one source written by Debbie Chachara. Her article was posted in an academic journal and criticized LEGO on how the company “design[s] different experiences for each group,” which I strongly disagree is a valid critique. At seeing how infuriated I was at this article, I realized how passionate I was for the discussion.
Articles like Chachara’s will provide a basis for discussion through textual analysis. The research portion will be evaluated using studies done like Kristy Boekee and Ted Brown’s, which was published in the Journal of Occupational Therapy, School and Early Intervention. In that study, the effects of gendering within toys and source of gender bias is explored within children. These studies will validate whether there is harm to gender-bias within toy design and marketing on the child. Studies analyzed in my paper will be academically approved ones published in various academic journals, but articles that provide personal accounts will be a mix of academic and normal newspaper opinions. This will provide a variety of opinion and legitimacy to data interviewed. Some research will be based on my own observations as well.

  7. Not to much is necessarily understood about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, but it is known to be a major cause of concern for those who suffer from repeated head trauma. With every piece of newly discovered information about this neurological disorder, it is crucial that not only is it learnt how to more easily identify it before death, but to also learn and efficiently understand how it possibly affects an individual’s life. This is crucial, as it is seen with the case of Junior Seau, that CTE can increasingly change one’s personality behaviors. I came to this question after hearing a piece on SportsCenter about how Bo Jackson would have never played football if he had knew about CTE back in his day. This reminded me of how I had physical/neurologically changed from suffering from at least two concussions and made me think about how information on CTE was coming along and how subconcussive injuries affected people’s lives.
I plan on conducting a survey of sorts on Reditt and any other website that is somewhat similar, and posing a question directed towards those who have suffered subconcussive injuries ( such as “As someone who has suffered a subconcussive injury, how has your life, personality, etc. noticeably changed since suffering the injury?) Also, I hope to be able to contact former Texas A&M Wide Receiver Ryan Swope, who retired before the start of his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals due to multiple concussions throughout his career. It’s my belief that insight provided from him would be a major benefit for my research as a whole.

  8. 1) My research question entails, “why are mass shootings so prevalent in the United States?” From the beginning, I have been quite curious as to why mass violence seemed so routine in comparison to other countries. Many scholars have discussed that gun rights in the U.S., mental health care availability, and stark media coverage of mass shootings affect the nation greatly, but no one scholar has answered the token question.
    2) I have decided to analyze all the contributing factors to mass shootings in the U.S. One of these factors includes gun rights, a subject discussed heavily in popular culture as a whole and by scholars like Lacey Wallace and Adam Lankford. The media portrayal of mass violence is another, detrimental factor, because the media often affects victims and future perpetrators. Researching these factors and others will bring me one step closer to analyzing the gap in this conversation.
    3) Because my research involves analytical data, stats, and research done by others, I will not be conducting a study but will be further exploring the conversation using the work of qualified scholars. This will include a great deal of textual analysis.

  9. The research on the effects of sleep deprivation on academic success of college students began focused the question of does the frequency of all-nighters have an effect on GPA because from experience it seemed that this might be the case. There was a common theme among all of the research papers that each and every one of them essentially did the same study and came to the same conclusion: that sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality correlate to a lower GPA. Not a single one of these studies went on to find out what the students with good sleeping habits and high academic achievement did to maintain both good sleeping habits and good grades. So, the research question has morphed into: What daily habits of high achieving non-sleep-deprived students can help to increase the academic success of students who are sleep deprived?

In order to gain the data necessary for this project, students at UCF will be studied to find correlations between
sleep deprivation and academic success. Due to the large population and diversity of students on campus, a sample will likely be diverse enough to be representative of the population. The data required includes the sleep quality, academic standing, and daily habits of the students.

The research will be done using a questionnaire to first, assess the sleep quality of the participants including the frequency of all-nighters to see if there is indeed a correlation between such activities and GPA. Second, to assess the academic standing, including withdrawn courses using self-reported answers. Finally, the questionnaire will include a section for students to fill in daily habits which allow them to balance good sleep and good grades. An ideal case would be a large sample of 650 students, to have a confidence level of 99% and a margin of error of 5%. This will be difficult to achieve, so the goal is to survey at least 50 students. The Research subject will be asked to participate at random in order to make the sample as representative of the population as possible.
